Friedrich Merz has failed to clear a first hurdle to be the new chancellor of Germany because he didn't get the majority required to become new leader, APA reports citing Deutche Welle.

He secured 310 votes in favor in a secret ballot, six fewer than the required majority of 316. The parliament has 630 members in total.
